Olympic torch carrier shortlist for Boston revealed

Olympic torch carrier shortlist for Boston revealed
A HAMMER thrower and a health walker from Boston council are among those shortlisted to potentially carry the Olympic torch.

Lincolnshire Sports Partnership said five-time county hammer throw champion Dominic Sykes and Boston Borough Council’s play and physical activity officer Fran Taylor had both made it through to the final stage of the selection process.
Boston Borough Council have also nominated a number of people, however, they would not release the names of those who had made it through.
A council spokesman said: “Several nominations have been made, but the ruling council has said that the successful candidates will not be named until the end of the year and we would sooner wait until that point before naming them.”
About 28,000 individuals across the UK have been nominated for the torch relay.

Graceland

J'ville vet honors Elvis' military service

A Jacksonville resident and Army veteran had a hand in honoring the military service of Elvis Presley.
James Bryan Welch was among a delegation of 3rd Armored Division veterans who attended the unit’s annual reunion last month in Memphis, Tenn. They visited the late entertainer’s home, Graceland, and presented a plaque recognizing his Army service.
“I was very humbled and proud to be there,” Welch said. “It was kind of a surreal moment. For a moment in time, we forgot that he was the ‘King of Rock and Roll.’ For about five minutes, he was Sgt. Elvis Presley.”
Presley served in the 3rd Armored Division from 1958 to 1960 in Friedberg, West Germany, and was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant.
While in Memphis, Welch and other members of the 3rd Armored Division Association also visited Beale Street, Sun Studio, the Memphis Rock ’n’ Soul Museum and St. Jude Children’s Hospital, where they presented a $2,500 check as a donation.
Welch enjoyed his first visit to Graceland.
“I was impressed with how they have maintained Graceland and kept it much like it was the day [Presley] died,” he said. “Graceland is an amazing place.”
Presley died Aug. 16, 1977, at age 42.

Elvis Presley died of a sudden 34 years ago, but his lovers haven’t forgotten him

Elvis Presley died of a sudden 34 years ago, but his lovers haven’t forgotten him. Thousands of Elvis fans attained their way to the King’s grave at Graceland to remember the day of remembrance of his passing on tuesday, Billboard.com reports.
Presley’s music went to the fans’ vigil, with tracks like “If I Can Dream” running in the background as fans left flower placements and wreathes on the gravesite. According to Billboard, the vigil is the main event of “Elvis” week, with fans awaiting hours outside the Memphis mansion for the procession to begin.
Crowds assembled from as far away as Brazil, undiscouraged by humid temperatures in the high 80s. Based on local police approximates, about 15,000 to 20,000 people went to the morning vigil. It may look like a high number, but an Elvis Presley Enterprises spokesman told the media that next year’s 35th anniversary event is expected to draw about 75,000 fans.
The vigil started when some devoted fans began visiting Elvis Presley’s grave to pay court to their favourite singer after his death in 1977. Five years later, the event was formally organized.
The King’s large charm may have been the result of his various voice. Presley was able to range from country and pop music to gospel and blues easily. During his lifetime, he was nominated for 14 competitive Grammys, and has since been induced into four music halls of fame.

Craft now floating on a local tide of interest

Once regarded as a past-time for grannies, craft making in Northern Ireland - including pottery, knitting and jewellery-making - has experienced a renaissance in popularity among all ages. August Craft Month, organised by Craft NI, is hosting exhibits and workshops to showcase the best examples of craft and also encourage people to learn new skills.
This year's theme, Craft Chat, aims to get the public thinking about the relevance of craft through discussion, storytelling, poetry and online blogging.
The Ulster Museum and the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum are holding workshops on leatherwork, interactive sculpture and cross-stitch brooches.
Artist Gail Mahon, from Co Londonderry, who is exhibiting her work during the month said there has been a new surge in interest in crafts across the generations.
"It is a kind of DIY culture and a type of 'craftism" developing," she said. "Groups like knitting circles have shaken off the twee stereotypes with all age groups engaging in them."
Tomorrow's 'Craft of Conversation' will see designers display their work in the Crafty Tearoom in Wellington Place, Belfast.
"The idea is to put craft at the centre of a table where people are sitting down to eat and to get them thinking about it," Ms Mahon said. "Everybody has a bit of creativity in them, these events give people the chance to explore that."

Hand Crafted Luxury Cards for all occasions: New Today------Hand Crafted Eco Friendly Jute Bags...: "These are great-----------go to the website for our great selection You wont be disappointed"

Faded away, forever lost in time. The good old days. The FANTASTIC fifties

Do you remember the wringer washing machine, the big standing radios and life without a dish washer? I remember, because I was  raised in the 50’s. I feel that the fifties were the greatest years to be alive. A time  when we were one nation under one God.
Kids  played outside, and actualy used their imaginations, a stick became a horse, a airplane made from a sheet of paper. The  Tiny Tears and Betsey Wetsie dolls became hits. Girls played hop-scotch, jump rope and jacks, while the boys played with their tops, Yoyo’s and traded  base ball cards. My brother even taught me to play marbles.
A time when just 10d would buy a bag of potato chips, RC Cola and a Moon Pie. Penny loafers, Bobby Socks were in style. A time when we knew our neighbors. When people sat on their porches at night, while the kids played and caught lightning bugs.
I sometimes wonder, if my mom who died in the 70s, could see the world today  in 2011, what her  reaction would be. Computers, IPads, IPhones etc.
Nudity.vulgar language and filth pouring out of Hollywood into our own living rooms, evil that would offend even the vilest people from the fifties.
Gone are the days of simple toys, cheap candy. Nothing comes cheap in this generation.
Even God has been degraded or replaced by idol gods brought into our country by religions not known  ,setting up their temples.
Faded away, forever lost in time. The good old days. The fifties

The net closes around Piers Morgan

Piers Morgan - will he lose his CNN show?
Piers Morgan - will he lose his CNN show?

It has taken several weeks for Piers Morgan to become entangled in the phone hacking net, but it now looks probable that he’ll receive an invitation from John Whittingdale MP to appear before the Culture, Media and Sport select committee. That is an extremely perilous position for the ex-editor of the News of the World and the Daily Mirror to find himself in.
Morgan’s eventual summons was probably inevitable, but he has not helped his cause by allowing himself to be drawn into  spats with Louise Mensch MP and other influential people
